Have you ever been at home, chilling, and your kids start driving you nuts, and you’re not really sure why? It’s like everything they do is making you more irritated and frustrated, but there is not any real reason for it. Okay, so you are totally not alone in this. I get this way too, to the point where I lose my cool with my kids and then immediately regret it. It’s not like I have a specific reason for being mad at them, it was just that I couldn’t stand what they were doing, but I also didn’t understand why out of nowhere I would get angry with them.
I am not sure when or where this hit me, but I realized that when I would reach that point of frustration, which seemed totally out of the blue, that there was an underlying cause to these feelings, and that cause was actually me being OVERSTIMULATED.
The tv would be on, and the girls would be playing (loudly) on their devices with screaming and noises in the background and they would be talking to me at the same time, and they would be jumping around and I would be trying to work on the computer or get housework done and the cats would be running around, and my husband would be having a conversation or listening to something in the other room and …and...I would just need everyone to take it down like 4 notches.
That is what I mean when I say overstimulated. Do you feel the same way sometimes?
But like most things, once you are aware of the problem you can find solutions right? So here are 5 ways that I deal with overstimulation that I hope will help you too.
1. Take some quiet time
This is a very important step, because you first have to escape the chaos before you can relax and reset. I tend to hide out in my bedroom or on my porch, because nature can be very helpful in regulating our systems. During this time, take a moment to close your eyes, relax your eyelids, shoulders, jaw, and body. Take some deep breaths. This is not a time to escape and watch tv or scroll social media (I know it can be tempting, but we are trying to get rid of stimuli during this time, remember). After a few minutes, you will feel more calm and grounded.
2. Practice mindfulness -
Mindfulness is just paying attention without judgment. When in your quiet space, pay attention to what you are feeling, where you notice it in your body, what is causing the overstimulation. When we are aware of the causes, we can take steps to lessen the simultaneous inputs. For example, for me, I get overstimulated with noise. Too many noises, too loud sends me into frantic energy, but for my husband, its lighting. Practicing mindfulness will help you to pinpoint your needs and create new environments to maintain a sense of calm.
3. Aroma Reset-
The Aroma Reset is a 5 minute process to help you quickly regulate your emotions and change your mood about a situation using therapy based practices and smelling in essential oils. I am not going to take up your time explaining the whole process, but if you want to learn more, you can read about that here. This simple, but mighty process has helped me to regulate my emotions easier, and bounce back faster when I am feeling overwhelmed, in a funk, or simply irritated by all the things.
4. Listen to "vibe" music-
For this strategy, I wear earbuds, because it helps to drown out all of the extra noises, which as I mentioned before is a main cause of my overstimulation. Music has a unique ability to influence our mood, emotions, and energetic vibrations. Our personal vibrations will change to match that of the music. For overstimulation, I prefer music that is instrumental, and has binaural beats. If you just search Youtube for “Frequency Music” videos related to creating calm and positivity should pop up right away. That's what I call my “vibe” music. Whether you listen to it while you work, drive, or do chores, or to just drown out the noise of kids, it can help you feel more relaxed and less stressed. Here are a couple of links to some of my favorite accounts:
5. Essential Oils -
Did you know our sense of smell taps directly into the survival part of our brains (the fight, flight, or freeze area)? It is our body’s way of protecting us, like when we smell smoke or rotting food and our body screams “danger!”
Whereas aromas can trigger our survival mechanisms, they can also soothe those systems. Have you ever walked into a house and smelled freshly baked cookies and immediately felt calm and cozy? That’s aromas calming our systems. Breathing in essential oils can help you to quickly regulate your emotions and recenter yourself. My favorite oils for regulating my emotions and calming my nerves are Stress Away, Valor, Joy, and Peace & Calming.
Overstimulation and chaos can be challenging to handle, especially for busy moms who have a lot going on all of the time. However, with these 5 simple strategies, you can manage your stress levels and feel more grounded and centered. Remember to give yourself permission to take quiet time alone, practice mindfulness, use essential oils, listen to relaxing music, and take good care of yourself. You got this!
